Red Bay
Because of its rich history and innumerable archeological finds, Red Bay has applied for designation as an UNESCO historical site. Four hundred years ago, Basque Whalers carried out a very large whaling fishery in Red Bay; at the time Red Bay was the largest whaling port in the world. This four hundred year old settlement not only possesses the oldest shipwreck north of the Caribbean (1565) but, because of the cold water, the best preserved shipwreck of the post medieval period anywhere in the world.

The predecessors of the present day population came, for the most part, from Conception Bay, Newfoundland. At first, these settlers occupied two communities in Red Bay. The winter community was located in the sheltered basin where there was an ample supply for wood, fresh water and soil. In the summer months, the population migrated several miles seaward to the harbour where they carried on their inshore fishery. In the 1930's the basin community was abandoned and the harbour location became the permanent settlement.
